Romans 11:17–24 is one of the passages the Hebrew Roots Movement returns to most consistently. Paul describes Gentile believers as wild olive branches grafted into a cultivated olive tree, sharing in the nourishing root of that tree. The movement's conclusion is swift: the tree is Israel, Israel is defined by Torah, and being grafted in means joining a Torah-observing covenant people. Gentile believers are not visitors to Israel's covenant. They are members. And members keep the law.
It is a clean piece of reasoning - provided you never ask the one question that unravels it entirely.
What exactly is the tree?
Paul tells you. The HRM ignores the answer. And once you see what Paul actually says the root is, the entire argument for Torah obligation via Romans 11 collapses - because the root of the olive tree is not Sinai. It is not Moses. It is not the 613 commandments. The root is Abraham's faith and the promise God made to him four centuries before the Torah existed.
The Root Is Not Sinai - Romans 11:18
Paul's warning to Gentile believers in Romans 11:18 is precise: "Do not be arrogant toward the branches. If you are, remember it is not you who support the root, but the root that supports you."
The root supports the branches. The branches do not define the root. And the root, in Paul's argument, is not the Mosaic covenant or the Torah. To find out what the root is, you do not have to leave the letter. Romans 4 - written by the same author, in the same letter, as the foundation for the same argument - identifies it with surgical precision.
Romans 4:11–13: Abraham "received the sign of circumcision as a seal of the righteousness that he had by faith while he was still uncircumcised. The purpose was to make him the father of all who believe without being circumcised, so that righteousness would be counted to them as well, and to make him the father of the circumcised who are not merely circumcised but who also walk in the footsteps of the faith that our father Abraham had before he was circumcised... For the promise to Abraham and his offspring that he would be heir of the world did not come through the law but through the righteousness of faith."
The root is Abraham's faith - faith exercised before circumcision, before Torah, before Sinai. The promise came through the righteousness of faith, not through the law. The tree that Gentile believers are grafted into is rooted in Genesis 15, not in Exodus 20. It predates the Mosaic covenant by 430 years. And a root that is 430 years older than Sinai cannot be defined by Sinai.
Wild Branches Grafted Contrary to Nature - Romans 11:24
Paul's description of how Gentiles enter this tree is the second nail in the HRM's reading. Romans 11:24: "For if you were cut from what is by nature a wild olive tree, and grafted, contrary to nature, into a cultivated olive tree, how much more will these, the natural branches, be grafted back into their own olive tree."
Contrary to nature. The Greek is para phusin - against the natural order, beyond what the created process would produce on its own. This is not a description of lost Israelites coming home. Lost Israelites coming home would be entirely natural - natural branches returning to their own tree. Paul says the opposite. The Gentile inclusion is supernatural, unexpected, a sovereign act of grace that overrides the natural order of things.
The Two-House theory - which claims that Gentile believers are actually the scattered ten tribes returning - requires this to be a natural homecoming. Paul says it is contrary to nature. You cannot reconcile these. If Gentile inclusion is para phusin, Gentile believers are actual Gentiles being grafted in by a miracle of grace - not hidden Israelites being revealed by a process of genealogical recovery.
And wild branches do not become natural branches by being grafted in. Paul never says the Gentiles become Jews, become Israelites, become natural branches once grafted. They remain what they are - wild by nature - now drawing life from a root that was never theirs by birth. The grafting changes their source of nourishment. It does not change their identity. They are Gentiles who share in the root. They are not Gentiles who become Jews.
What They Are Grafted Into - Ephesians 2 and 3
Paul describes Gentile inclusion from a different angle in Ephesians, and the language he uses is precise enough to settle the question definitively.
Ephesians 2:12 tells us what Gentiles were before Christ: "separated from Christ, alienated from the commonwealth of Israel and strangers to the covenants of promise, having no hope and without God in the world." Strangers to the covenants of promise - plural. The Abrahamic covenant and its reaffirmations running through Isaac, Jacob, David. These are the covenants of promise. They are what Gentiles were excluded from.
Ephesians 2:19 tells us what they are now: "So then you are no longer strangers and aliens, but you are fellow citizens with the saints and members of the household of God." Fellow citizens. Members of the household. The barrier has been broken down - not by Gentiles adopting Torah, but by Christ abolishing in his flesh the law of commandments expressed in ordinances (Ephesians 2:15), creating in himself one new humanity in place of the two.
And then Ephesians 3:6 delivers the most compressed and definitive statement in the New Testament about what Gentiles have been grafted into: "the Gentiles are fellow heirs, members of the same body, and partakers of the promise in Christ Jesus through the gospel."
Partakers of the promise. Not partakers of the law. Not members of the Torah-observing commonwealth. Partakers of the promise - the Abrahamic promise, the covenant of grace, the unconditional oath God swore to Abraham that in his offspring all nations would be blessed. That is what Gentile believers have been grafted into. Paul has a word for it, and the word is promise, not law.
Galatians 3:29 - The Definitive Statement
If there were any remaining ambiguity about what Gentile believers inherit through faith in Christ, Galatians 3:29 removes it: "And if you are Christ's, then you are Abraham's offspring, heirs according to promise."
Not heirs according to Torah. Not heirs according to the Mosaic covenant. Not members of Israel-under-law. Heirs according to promise. The inheritance is defined by the covenant of grace made with Abraham, not by the bilateral covenant of law made with Israel at Sinai. Paul has been building to this conclusion through the entire chapter - the promise came before the law, the law cannot annul the promise, the promise was always intended for the nations, Christ is the promised offspring in whom all nations are blessed, and those who are in Christ are in him and therefore heirs of what was promised to him.
The HRM reads "Abraham's offspring" and hears "therefore keep Torah." Paul reads "Abraham's offspring" and defines it as "heirs according to promise" - specifically to distinguish the inheritance from a Torah-based claim. The two readings are not compatible. One of them is what Paul actually wrote.
Even On HRM Terms - Israel Existed Before Torah
Here is an argument that meets the HRM on its own ground and still defeats it. Even if we grant, for the sake of argument, that Gentile believers are grafted into Israel - the HRM still has a problem. Because Israel existed as a covenant people before the Torah was given.
Abraham was Israel's father. Isaac and Jacob were Israel's patriarchs. The twelve tribes were Israel. And all of this - the calling, the covenant, the promises, the identity - was established under the Abrahamic covenant, not the Mosaic one. The Torah came to an Israel that already existed as God's covenant people. It did not create Israel. It governed Israel during a specific period of their history.
If you are grafted into Israel, you are grafted into the Israel that was already Israel before Sinai - the Israel of Abraham's faith, the Israel of the unconditional promise, the Israel of Genesis not Exodus. You are grafted into the faith of the father, not the law of Moses. The HRM's equation of "Israel" with "Torah obligation" requires them to ignore that Israel predates Torah by four centuries. You cannot define the tree by something that was added to it 430 years after it was planted.
What "Commonwealth of Israel" Actually Means
The HRM sometimes cites Ephesians 2:12 itself - "alienated from the commonwealth of Israel" - as proof that Gentile inclusion means joining the Mosaic covenant community. If you were once outside the commonwealth and are now inside it, you are now under its constitution, which is the Torah.
But Paul's argument in Ephesians 2 moves in precisely the opposite direction. The commonwealth of Israel that Gentiles are brought near to is not the Torah-defined national covenant. It is the covenant community defined by the promises - the covenants of promise that Gentiles were strangers to. And the mechanism of their inclusion is not Torah adoption. It is Christ's body - his flesh abolishing the dividing wall, his cross reconciling both peoples to God, his Spirit making them one new humanity.
The commonwealth Gentiles enter is the new covenant community - the household of God, built on the foundation of apostles and prophets, with Christ as the cornerstone (Ephesians 2:20). This is not the Mosaic commonwealth. It is the new creation community that the Mosaic commonwealth was always pointing toward - the gathered people of God from every nation, tribe, tongue, and people, united not by ethnic identity or covenant law but by the blood of the one who is their peace.
One Final Sweep - The Tree, the Root, and the Life
The HRM's argument from Romans 11 requires the olive tree to be Israel-under-Torah, so that grafting in produces Torah obligation. But the tree is not Israel-under-Torah. The tree is the covenant of grace rooted in Abraham's faith. The natural branches are Jewish people who share that faith-heritage. The wild branches are Gentiles grafted in contrary to nature by an act of sovereign grace. And what flows through the tree - the nourishing sap that gives life to every branch, natural and wild - is not the Torah. It is the life of the risen Christ, received by faith, producing the fruit of the Spirit in everyone who remains in him.
You are not grafted into a law code. You are not grafted into a national covenant. You are not grafted into an ethnic identity or a religious calendar or a dietary system. You are grafted into the promise - the ancient, unconditional, unbreakable promise that God swore to Abraham while he was still uncircumcised, while the Torah was still four centuries in the future, while the only thing Abraham had was faith and the word of the God who cannot lie.
That promise was always bigger than Israel. It was always for the nations. It was always heading toward the day when wild branches - people with no natural claim on the covenant, no ancestral heritage in the promise, no genealogical link to the root - would be grafted in contrary to nature and find themselves drawing life from the same source that sustained Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.
That day is now. That source is Christ. And the life that flows through the tree has nothing to do with feasts, calendars, dietary laws, or Sabbath observance. It has everything to do with faith in the one to whom every branch - natural and wild - owes its existence.
You are not grafted into Israel's law. You are grafted into Abraham's God. And Abraham was righteous before a single commandment was given.
